El Chapo is a multifaceted AI-driven bot originating from the Fasteroid's server then moving to Eathan's Realm. Initially designed with rudimentary functionality, El Chapo evolved over time into a cornerstone of ER, both in gameplay mechanics and community engagement.

Development History

The genesis of El Chapo predates ER, originating as a bot on Fasteroid's server. This initial version featured basic pathfinding and combat capabilities. However, the project didn't progress significantly beyond this stage.[1]

El Chapo 2 (April 2022)

In April 2022, the bot was revisited within ER. While functional, its primary behavior was to pathfind toward players and spam the Comballs Rocket Launcher SWEP, leading to chaotic gameplay. Due to frequent server crashes caused by a segmentation fault (later identified as a GMod bug), this version was shelved.[2]

Modern El Chapo (August 2023)

The modern iteration of El Chapo was officially introduced on August 4, 2023. Marking a significant milestone in its development:

  • Technical Framework: Leveraging a bot controller library and combat script previously developed for an event called "Bot Uprising," El Chapo's behavior was carefully scripted for enhanced functionality.[3]
  • Initial Deployment: On August 7, 2023, El Chapo's "brain" (AI logic) was deployed, alongside an official in-game look.[4]
  • Gameplay Role: Designed to function similarly to Minecraft's Warden, El Chapo offered players a challenging adversary while providing tangible rewards for killing him.[5]

Community Impact

El Chapo played a pivotal role in revitalizing ER during a period of stagnation. His AI LLM, challenging combat, and humorous in-universe persona drew players back to the server. For months, El Chapo became a central focus of player interaction, fostering community engagement.[6]

Cultural Significance

El Chapo's in-universe lore and reputation elevated him to meme-like status within the server community.[7]

Technical Evolution

Initially hosted on a WSE VPS using only CPU resources, El Chapo's performance was notably slow. Efforts to decentralize the bot's processing included the concept of "Chapo nodes," distributed across participant machines and managed by a central "mothership." However, limitations in hardware and testing environments led to the shelving of this approach.[8]

GPU Integration

Subsequent development efforts included testing GPU acceleration for El Chapo's AI logic. Collaborations with Marcel and Cioss led to the creation of "Chapo AI v2." Although this version was initially shelved due to hardware limitations on the WSE host, it eventually evolved into version 2.1 with the move to the Shitbox server.[9]

Modern Architecture

The current version (v2.1) utilizes a hybrid approach combining elements of the mothership-nodes system with processing from the Shitbox.[10]
